History of Wuhan University
Established in 1893 as the Ziqiang Institute through the collaborative efforts of Zhang Zhidong, governor of Hubei and Hunan provinces in the late Qing Dynasty. The institution offered only four courses, namely; four courses: Chinese, Mathematics, Nature, and Business.
As time passed, the Institute of Minerals and the Institute of Chemical added fresh courses such as Nature Science, Engineering, English, French, German, Russian, and Japanese were added.
The Ziqiang Institute moved to Dongchang Kou, Wuchang. To that end, the administration renamed the school the Foreign Languages Institute and began teaching geography, history, mathematics, law, and communication.
In 1926, the institution experienced growth through its merger with the National Wuchang Business University, Hubei University of Medicine, Hubei University of Law, Hubei Arts and Humanities University, and Wuchang Private Chinese University to form the National Wuchang Sun Yat-sen University.
The institute changed its name several times because of the different evolution processes it underwent before it finally named itself Wuhan National University in July 1928.
The National Government sponsored this change in Nanjing. With this, WHU became and remained one of the earliest national universities in modern China.
By the end of 1946, WHU had established 6 colleges: liberal arts, law, sciences, engineering, agriculture, and medicine. In 1999, the world-renowned journal Science enlisted WHU as one of China’s most prominent institutions of higher learning.
WHU experienced a breakthrough in 2000 with the amalgamation of the former Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping, and Hubei Medical University. This ushered in a new era in its 100 years of development.
Today, WHU has established cooperative relationships and academic links with over 400 universities and research institutes in over 70 countries and regions. WHU has consistently progressed, ranking high in local and international university rankings.
Since its inception, WHU has trained and cultivated over 300,000 talents who today have positively impacted the world.
