Yale School of Drama Overview

The (also known as YSD) is a graduate vocational school at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. The school was founded in 1924 under the “Dramatic Department of the School of Fine Arts.”

The school offers training in all the disciplines of theatre: acting, design (set design, costume design, lighting design, projection design, and sound design), directing, dramaturgy and dramatic criticism, playwriting, stage management, technical design and production, and theatre management.

School Facilities

A variety of locations on the Yale University campus serve the School of . The university theater is a front-stage theater shared with the Undergraduate Dramatic Association and also houses the main administrative offices of the school.

The Yale Repertory Theater is located in the old building of Calvary Baptist Church. It contains an auditorium opposite a modified platform, as well as the Yale School of Drama/Yale Repertory Theater box office.

Other facilities include the Iseman Theater at Holcombe T. Green, the Jr. Hall, the Theater School Annex, and the Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library.

Yale School of Drama Admission Requirements

Admission to the Yale School of Drama is only for full-time graduate study beginning in the fall term. Transfer or part-time students are not accepted.

As was already established, the Yale School of Drama has extremely strict entrance standards. All applicants must be proficient performers on stage to be accepted into the program.

A resume, a statement of purpose with a well-written 1,000-word essay, three letters of recommendation from professionals, an academic transcript, and a current photo are all required by the Yale School of Drama.

Yale School of Drama Acceptance Rate

The low acceptance rate at the Yale School of Drama is not attributable to the strict admission standards.

Only 15 to 17 hopefuls are reportedly accepted into the acting school each year. In 1999, the school only accepted 68 out of 1270 candidates, or 5.4% of all applicants.

Application perfection is required in light of the low acceptance rate to avoid rejection by the admissions committee.

The David Geffen School of Drama at Yale only admits students who plan to enroll in full-time graduate programs starting in mid-August for the autumn semester.

Application Deadlines

There isn't an open entrance policy. No summer session is held. Students who transfer or study part-time are not accepted.

All applications are carefully reviewed by the David Geffen School of Drama Admissions Committee, and admission decisions are made on or before April 1.

The following dates must receive applications for admission at 11:59 pm .S.T.:

  • November 23, 2024: Playwriting, Technical Design and Production, and Technical Internship Certificate
  • December 1, 2024: Directing
  • January 2, 2025: Acting, Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism, and Stage Management
  • February 1, 2025: Design, Theater Management, and Special Research Fellow
  • February 15, 2025: Aid applications for U.S. citizens and international applicants. 

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test

NOTE: The David Geffen School of Drama has eliminated the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) requirement for prospective applicants. The GRE test will not be considered.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

  • Must be taken by January 15, 2024, by applicants to all programs
  • Required of an applicant whose first language is not English

Yale School of Drama Courses

The School of Drama offers a Master of Fine Arts in acting, design, sound design, directing, dramaturgy and dramatic criticism, playwriting, stage management, technical design and production, and theatre management.

Students must hold an undergraduate degree and complete their program of study with distinction, which requires three years in residence.

The school also offers a Doctor of Fine Arts to students with an M.F.A. degree in Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism who have written a dissertation approved by the D.F.A. committee.

Yale School of Drama Tuition and General Expenses

The tuition fee for 2024/2025 is $34,800. Yale School of Drama Tuition covers less than 30 percent of the university's training costs, and most school expenses are underwritten by philanthropy.

A reasonable estimate of costs incurred by a student attending Yale School of Drama and living off-campus in the 2021–2022 academic year was between $50,480 and $52,855. It includes:

Tuition for special students is $34,800. Tuition for technical interns and special research fellows is $17,400. Tuition for D.F.A. candidates in residence is $1,000.

All students enrolled at least half-time in a degree-seeking program receive free Yale Health Basic Coverage services. They are automatically enrolled and billed for hospital and specialty coverage through Yale Health.

Students may waive Yale Health's hospital/specialty coverage due to evidence that they have valid and sufficient alternative hospital coverage.

The estimate of living expenses is based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics' moderate budget standard for this area. The Yale School of Drama also reviews actual budgets each year to verify that the current budget is reasonable.

Actual costs may vary from individual to individual. Spending has increased steadily in recent years, and it is safe to assume that tuition and living expenses for the 2023-2024 academic year will be higher.

The Yale School of Drama's financial aid policy has been designed to ensure that all qualified students with demonstrated financial need will have the opportunity to attend Yale within the School of Drama's resources. The school awards substantial financial aid each year, totaling more than $8 million in 2022–2023.

Financial aid at the School of Drama is awarded based on demonstrated financial need. Financial need is calculated as the difference between the cost of attendance and the assessed student and parental contributions.

The financial aid award combines work-study employment, educational , tuition , and living expense scholarships.

As of 2024/2025, the average student with demonstrated high financial need receives from the school work-study employment, , and living expense scholarships, providing 90 percent of the cost of attendance over three years.

The average student with demonstrated moderate financial need receives from the School work-study employment and scholarship grants, providing 91 percent of the cost of attendance over three years.

The average student with demonstrated low financial need receives work-study employment and scholarship grants, providing 80 percent of the cost of attendance over three years.

Students who do not qualify for need-based financial aid may be able to receive assistance through work-study employment and various supplemental loan programs.
