CULTURAL FUNDING PROGRAMMES IN GERMANY

1. The DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program

The DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program is one of the world's most respected artist-in-residence programmes for established artists working in the fine arts, film, literature, and music. – DAAD Funding Programmes.

Programme description

The Artists-in-Berlin Program sees itself as a platform for artistic and cultural exchange throughout and beyond Europe. Every year, it invites applications from around the world for approximately 20 scholarships funding a usually one-year stay in Berlin.

These scholarships are aimed at extraordinary and internationally established artists from abroad.

The Artists-in-Berlin Program is designed to offer its guests space for their creative work, promote the diversity and variety of artistic viewpoints, and strengthen the freedom of the arts and the written and spoken word.

Scholarship holders, therefore, have every freedom to develop their approach, work on their art or interact with fellow artists.

Programme Target group

Internationally established and outstanding artists from abroad who would like to come to Berlin in order to work on their art and interact with fellow artists. Age is irrelevant.

Scholarship benefits

The scholarship benefits in the form of monthly rates allow for an appropriate living standard; furnished residences are provided.

Travel and baggage expenses (including for partners and children, if they accompany the artist to Berlin for the full duration of the invitation) are covered, as are health and accident insurance and German lessons.

2. Artists' Residence Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral

The artists' residence Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral in Bad Ems awards four- and eight-month residency grants to visual artists from Germany and abroad whose artistic work has a clear connection to the topic or genre of the respective application round. – DAAD Funding Programmes.

Scholarships at short notice

The Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral is offering a fellowship for a curator as soon as possible, but no later than 1 July 2022. The deadline for applications is 27 May 2023. More information can be found on the website of the Künstlerhaus (only available in German).

Programme Description

The Künstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral in Bad Ems is an institution of the Kunsthochschule Mainz of the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz and supports international visual artists with residency grants.

The Künstlerhaus also manages the project, travel, and exchange grants for artists with a connection to Rhineland-Palatinate. 

The Künstlerhaus has the task of promoting visual artists. Balmoral is a place of encounter, reflection, creation, and (artistic) knowledge production.

The Künstlerhaus is a center for contemporary art that has an impact on the public through exhibitions and various events. It's a place of vision.

Scholarship Target Group

National and international fine artists who have completed an arts degree (Master's or equal) and subsequently worked as an artist for three years prior to taking up their scholarship.

Applications from autodidacts who have demonstrably produced outstanding artistic work are also accepted. Applicants' artistic work must focus on a particular genre or a certain topic specified for each round of applications.

In addition, an eight-month curator scholarship is awarded every year.

Scholarship benefits

The scholarship includes a grant of 1,400 EUR per month, a furnished bed-/living room with a bathroom, and a studio.

A lounge, dining room, and kitchen are available for communal use. Three of the scholarships are awarded for four months and three for eight months.

Application rounds usually begin in March each year when that year's topic is announced and run to the end of April. Usually, the residential scholarships start in April of the following year.

3. Stiftung Künstlerhaus Schöppingen (Artists' Village Schöppingen)

Künstlerdorf Schöppingen sponsors German and international artists and scholars working in literature, the fine arts, new media, interdisciplinary projects, and experimental composition. – DAAD Funding Programmes.

Programme Description

Künstlerdorf Schöppingen awards around 30 artist scholarships of an average of three months' duration every year, including scholarships for new media, interdisciplinary projects, and experimental composition.

The village in Münsterland is intended to serve the artists as a laboratory where cooperation and international exchange can arise.

During their scholarship, the artists live in renovated farmhouses from the 19th century with a range of studios, ateliers, and event and gallery spaces. Readings, workshops, and art exhibitions take place regularly.

Künstlerdorf Schöppingen is funded by the foundation NRW Stiftung “Natur – Heimat – Kultur”, the Ministry for Culture and Science of the federal state of North-Rhine Westphalia, the Westfalen-Lippe regional authority, the district of Borken, the municipality of Schöppingen and the Förderverein Künstlerdorf Schöppingen.

Target group

Fine artists, composers, authors, media artists, and scholars from Germany and abroad.

Scholarship benefits

Grants are paid at a monthly rate of 1,025 EUR, from which between 100 and 200 EUR are deducted for apartment/studio rent. Residency is mandatory.

Formalities

The application requirements are set out in the respective current call for applications. The scholarships are redefined every year. Specialist juries choose the winners.

Fine arts/new media/mixed media: Approximately ten scholarships lasting two to six months are awarded each year.

There is no age limit, the scholarship period can be chosen freely. Applications must be submitted online during a specified period over the summer months.

Literature: Approximately ten scholarships are awarded each year. The same conditions as for fine artists apply.

Composition: Two six-month scholarships are awarded each year. There is no age limit, and the scholarship period is determined as either the first or the second half of a year.

KWW Scholarships: Approximately six scholarships lasting two to six months are awarded annually for special projects at the interface between art, science, and business.

4. Künstlerhaus Lukas

Künstlerhaus Lukas in Ahrenshoop is an international and transdisciplinary artist residence.  Short-term scholarships are awarded in the fields of visual arts, literature, music/composition, dance/performance, for transdisciplinary workshops and curating.

By awarding attendance scholarships without age restriction, the Künstlerhaus at the Baltic Sea offers its international scholarship holders a place for artistic production and theoretical reflection across disciplinary boundaries. – DAAD Funding Programmes.

To date, more than 2,000 artists belong to the interdisciplinary network.

Künstlerhaus Lukas Programme description

Künstlerhaus Lukas is a place for artistic work and international encounters. The focus on artistic exchange and cooperation with institutions in Northern Europe is unique.

The support of projects at the interface of art and environment is another exposed focus. With a special grant for curators, artistic explorations of ecological issues are promoted.

Through international exchange scholarships in cooperation with countries bordering the Baltic Sea and selected cultural institutions in Northern Europe, Künstlerhaus Lukas promotes cross-border and multi-voiced dialogue.

Institutions in scholarship exchange are currently the Artist Residence Hollufgård and the Fyns Grafiske Værksted Odense in Denmark, the Baltic Centre for Writers and Translators in Visby as well as the Ålgården Workshops and Gallery Borås in Sweden, in Iceland NES Artist Residence in Skagaströnd, in Finland Ars-Häme ry in Hämeenlinna.

In 2022, the network will be expanded with an environmental exchange fellowship in Norway. The international exchange programme and the events at Künstlerhaus Lukas enable encounters between different experts – transcultural and across generations.

Closely linked to the Künstlerhaus Lukas is the Neue Kunsthaus Ahrenshoop, a public forum for art and contemporary issues.

The Neues Kunsthaus Ahrenshoop regularly hosts public exhibitions, art festivals, symposia, readings, concerts, workshops, film screenings, and performances with scholarship holders.

Program Target group

Professional artists in the fields of visual arts (painting, sculpture, graphic arts, photography, artists' books, video, arts and crafts/design), literature (prose, poetry, drama, screenplay, essay, literary translation), dance (choreography, performance), music (composition) as well as curators who have their center of life in Germany or one of the other countries around the Baltic Sea (Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark), in Norway, Great Britain or Iceland. 

There is no age restriction.

Scholarship benefits

Every two years, up to 60 scholarships are awarded for one-month working stays and exchange scholarships, two-month scholarships in the field of curating and two-week workshop stays. 

With these DAAD Funding Programmes, the scholarship money amounts to 1,000 euros per month.

5. Akademie Schloss Solitude

Akademie Schloss Solitude near Stuttgart is an international Artist-in-Residence programme and has supported approximately 1,400 young artists from more than 120 countries since opening its doors in 1990.

It creates a close-knit, global, and transdisciplinary network of Solitude alumni that expands from year to year. – DAAD Funding Programmes.

Programme description

Application rounds for Solitude fellowships are held every two years. The jury awards a maximum of 65 fellowships.

International artists and scientists from the disciplines of visual arts and media, music and performing arts, digital art, gaming, digital journalism, digital publishing, architecture and design, literature and language, education, mediation, theory, humanities, social, natural, and economic sciences can apply for a fellowship.

The name Akademie Schloss Solitude unites the belief in artistic, scientific exchange with the notion of refuge, a credo that underlays the construction of the Schloss Solitude from the very beginning.

Residencies at Akademie Schloss Solitude enable fellows to devote themselves to their research projects under favorable material and intellectual conditions.

In this way, the available resources can be used in an optimal, needs-oriented manner. It is essential for the self-conception of Akademie Schloss Solitude that fellows of all disciplines are enabled to work and research free of daily pressures and presentation deadlines.

Despite this, the Akademie offers the possibility to communicate and present projects to the public.

A residential fellowship at Akademie Schloss Solitude should also be understood as a future investment, as it might sometimes only bear fruit at a later date, for both the fellow and the institution.

The founding director Prof. Jean-Baptiste Joly was the artistic director of Akademie Schloss Solitude from January 1, 1989, until March 31, 2018. Since May 1, 2018, Elke aus dem Moore has been the artistic director of Akademie Schloss Solitude.

The Akademie Schloss Solitude is financially supported by the German state of Baden-Württemberg.

Scholarship Target group

International artists, scientists, and cultural professionals are invited to apply for fellowships in the following spheres of practice:

• VISUAL (visual arts and media),
• AURAL & PHYSICAL (music and performing arts),
• DIGITAL (digital art, gaming, digital journalism, digital publishing),
• SPATIAL (architecture and design),
• TEXTUAL (literature and language),
• SOCIETAL/COMMUNAL-BASED WORK (education, mediation, theory),
• SCIENTIFIC/art, science & business (humanities, social, natural, and economic sciences).

The candidates should not be older than 40. Applications from students enrolled in degree programmes will not be considered. Applications of artist groups are possible. The main language is English.

It is possible to complete a creative project within the framework of the fellowship.

For the first time in its 30-year history, Akademie Schloss Solitude expanded its profile with the addition of a thematic focus to the 2024 application round for fellows joining the Akademie in 2024–2025.

Scholarship benefits

The Solitude fellowship is a residential fellowship. Fellows are obliged to spend at least two-thirds of their fellowships at the Akademie. All fellows must have their permanent residence in Stuttgart for the fellowship's duration (obligation to register residence).

The fellowship includes the following benefits: a free, furnished living/working studio including electricity, water, and heating, a monthly fellowship grant of € 1,200, and travel expenses for arrival and departure (on a one-time basis).

The Akademie also offers optional additional benefits which are adjustable following the current budget situation: transport expenses subsidy for materials, tools, instruments, and books to Stuttgart.

Also from Stuttgart to the fellow's home town, project funding, and one-off materials subsidy, health insurance in the case of non-EU fellowship candidates.

The Akademie maintains 45 living and working studios and three guest studios. These studios are usually only equipped for one person due to their size and the buildings' historic design. The Akademie does its best to accommodate families/partners.

Please note that this is not always possible in the case of families/partners from abroad, because entry and residence regulations must be observed.

An independent international jury selects all fellows. The jury is selected by a committee of experts. Fellowships are granted over a period of six, nine, or twelve months.
