About Malati Kanbur Fund

The MPhil in Population Health Sciences (PHS) is jointly run by the Department of Public Health and Primary Care, the MRC Epidemiology Unit, and the MRC Biostatistics Unit, with contributions from colleagues across the university.

The MPhil PHS is a postgraduate master's degree course that includes the academic disciplines of epidemiology, global health, health data science, infectious diseases, public health, and primary care research.

The MPhil PHS​ builds upon and replaces the previous MPhils in Primary Care Research, Public Health, and Epidemiology, which were taught for 6, 15, and 27 years respectively.

The course is open to graduates and other qualified candidates who wish to pursue a research, practice, or leadership career in population health sciences.

Tuition Fees & Funding

The university composition fees (tuition fees) for study are:

• MPhil in Population Health Sciences: Home £12,525 and International £32,412.
• MSt in Population Health Sciences annual fee: Home £6,262 and International £16,206

Studentships

HDRUK-funded scholarships are available to candidates following the Health Data Science theme.

These scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the course admissions committee to cover between 50% and 100% of tuition fees and living costs.

Applicants for the HDS stream will automatically be considered for these scholarships.

Departmental scholarships are also available for selected students following other themes. These scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the course admissions committee to cover between 50% and 100% of tuition fees.

The Lucy Cavendish – Trinity Global Health Studentship

This is an annual scholarship of £30,000 to support MPhil Population Health Sciences students.

The studentship is to cover tuition fees and maintenance fees for Home students and can cover the majority of tuition fees for Overseas students.

There is no specific MPhil PHS theme preference for the award.

In the academic year 2024/25, the applicant must select Lucy Cavendish as their first-choice college. All applicants who select Lucy Cavendish as their first-choice college will automatically be considered for this scholarship.

The Malati Kanbur Fund (Lucy Cavendish College)

The Malati Kanbur fund will be a full award to cover tuition and maintenance fees for one home or overseas student. 

The successful student will be supervised by Professor Jonathan Mant, Head of the Primary Care Unit, and be interested in focusing on stroke and elderly research in their dissertation.

The applicant must select Lucy Cavendish as their first-choice college, and follow the Primary Care Research theme.

All applicants who select Lucy Cavendish as their first choice college and Primary Care Research as their first theme choice in the application form will automatically be considered for this scholarship.

How to Apply

The course is open to graduates and other qualified candidates who wish to pursue a research, practice, or leadership career in population health sciences.

Applications for this course are highly competitive.

After reading the advice for applicants, apply using the University's Applicant Portal.

In the Applicant Portal, you can create and submit your application and supporting documents, and request references.

An application is only complete when:

1. you have submitted your application and supporting documents via the Applicant Portal
2. you have paid the £75 application fee. For further information on the application fees see here.
3. your referees have provided their references.

If you miss the deadlines specified in the applicant portal, you will not be able to submit your application.

Applicants may want to check their eligibility for an application fee waiver. Note the early deadline (30 November) for such applications.

Applications are considered on a rolling basis at monthly meetings. Applicants should normally receive a response to their application within eight weeks of applying.

Applicants who pass initial review by two admissions committee members will then be invited for an interview by members of the course admissions committee.

Interviews will be held remotely.

Selection process

The assessment panel will be seeking assurance that the candidate has the experience, ability, and commitment necessary to complete the MPhil course.

The following criteria are used to consider applications:

• Class of first-degree
• References from senior staff at the most recent university and/or place of employment
• Relevance of previous academic and work experience
• Candidate's responses to course-specific questions, as described in the Advice for Applicants
• Other supporting evidence, including an up-to-date curriculum vitae

Entry Requirements

Applicants will need to meet the standard minimum requirements for graduate study in Cambridge, including achievement of a good UK 2.1 honors degree or equivalent.

If your degree is not from the UK, please check International Qualifications to find the equivalent in your country

Applicants will usually have undergraduate experience in quantitative science or a degree in a health-related area, although other relevant experience will also be considered.

We also expect clear interest in Population Health Sciences (PHS), a clear commitment to a career in PHS, and a clear understanding of the contribution of the MPhil/MSt to applicants' future career ambitions.

Applicants without the standard university requirements but with clinical degrees, appropriate and compensatory professional experience, or intercalating medical students, may be considered via our non-standard admissions mechanism if they meet all other admissions criteria.

Mathematical skills at the level of an excellent A-level student are a minimum requirement for applicants to the Health Data Science (HDS) theme.

Nevertheless, we expect that most applicants to HDS will have more advanced mathematical training than A-level.

Applicants to HDS who only satisfy the minimum mathematical requirement will have an undergraduate degree in a field relevant to the course.

Some aptitude for and experience in computer programming is highly desirable for HDS applicants.

Applicants should carefully follow all instructions given here and in the Applicant Portal.

Before applying, applicants should consider how they will address each of the following questions on the application form.

Your answer to each question should be no more than 2000 characters (approximately 250 words): we value clarity and succinctness, and longer answers may impact negatively the impression you create.

#1. Statement of interest: explain why you are interested specifically in the MPhil course.

Briefly discuss a population health problem you have come across and explain how the knowledge and skills you hope to gain in the MPhil will help you address that problem.

#2. Career goals: Candidates must be clear about why they are doing the MPhil and how it will help them to achieve a career in population health sciences in service, academic or other settings.

#3. Relevant Experience: describe how your prior experience (research, academic, work, extra-curricular) might be relevant to your application for this MPhil, and your success on the course.

#4. Maths and Stats experience: Explain how your previous experience in maths and statistics has helped prepare you for the course, referring to the core module pre-requisites and self-screening tool on our website.

#5. Theme choice: Consider your first and second choice specialization theme to follow.

Note that while this is necessary for triage in our admissions process, at this stage your choice of theme is indicative, and can be changed during the course.

Nevertheless, your prospects of admittance to the course may be enhanced if your interests, qualifications, and experience align well with the themes you indicate. 

Select your first and second choice from Epidemiology, Global Health, Health Data Science, Infectious Diseases, Primary Care Research, and Public Health.

#6. Widening Participation: In support of our widening participation, equality, and diversity goals, we are keen to take relevant information into account when allocating our limited number of departmental scholarships.

In the UK, applicant circumstances that might fit with this goal include, for example:

• Having been eligible for Free School Meals at secondary school.

• Having spent at least three months in the care of your Local Authority whilst at secondary school.

• Living for the majority of your secondary school years in an area of high deprivation, as defined by the UK government's IMD postcode database, ranking 16250 or less (check your postcode at that time here: https://imd-by-postcode.opendatacommunities.org/imd/2019).

• Living for the majority of your secondary school years in an area where it is unusual for young people to go to university, as defined by the UK government's POLAR4 classification database, falling into Quintile 1 or 2 (check your postcode at that time here: https://www.officeforstudents.org.uk).

• Being in the first generation of your family to go to university entering undergraduate study as a mature student (21 or over).

• Being, or becoming during the course of your full-time undergraduate course, a single parent, lone foster parent, or lone guardian of a person who is aged under 18 and/or still in full-time education.

• Being estranged from immediate family or caregivers for the duration of your undergraduate course (for more information on what estrangement is, see http://www.thestandalonepledge.org.uk/).

• Being a full-time undergraduate student with caring responsibilities for an ill or disabled family member who could not manage without this help.

• Being in receipt of full state support for maintenance for your undergraduate course.
