Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has been dropped for the club’s Premier League clash against Newcastle following his costly errors in the 2-2 Europa League draw with Lyon.
The Cameroonian, who did not travel with the squad to Tyneside, has been “rested” by manager Ruben Amorim, a move reportedly agreed upon by both parties.
Onana’s omission comes amid mounting pressure from inside the dressing room, with some teammates privately calling for his axing after two glaring mistakes in France allowed Lyon to claw back a result.
He was also at the centre of a media storm after ex-United midfielder Nemanja Matic labelled him “one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history.”
Altay Bayindir is now set to make his Premier League debut at St James’ Park, stepping in after a long injury layoff.
The Turkish international has featured in cup games this season but has yet to start in the league.
His return to fitness comes at a critical time, with Amorim expected to reassess his goalkeeper options this summer.
Off the pitch, Onana has also faced personal challenges, including a recent violent robbery involving his wife in Cheshire, which led to the family receiving round-the-clock security.
Meanwhile, Newcastle will be without head coach Eddie Howe, who was hospitalised on Friday due to illness.
The club confirmed that Howe remains under observation while undergoing further tests.
Kick-off at St James’ Park will proceed under unusual circumstances for both sides.
